Ok. So, there are a million things I should be doing right now, but I decided to do this instead.

You know how sometimes you wake up with a song in your head and, no matter what you do, you cannot keep yourself from running that tune over and over? Well, for the past three days I have not been able to get rid of “Catch the Wind”, by Hedge and Donna.

Before you get a chance to say, “who the hell are Hedge and Donna!” let me explain. I grew up in San Diego and, as a teenager in the late 60’s, early 70’s, fancied myself as an up-and-coming singer/songwriter. I was in a number of different groups that played the local San Diego music venues and, on a couple of occasions, performed as a warm-up act for Hedge and Donna.

Hedge and Donna released four or five albums and also released work under the name Carson and Capers. They had a beautifully melodic sound and the content of their music was relevant and meaningful to their era. Their performances often included the percussionist, Carter “CC” Collins.

Realizing that you are still probably saying, “So, who are they?” let me just explain that I am pretty certain I am one of a select few who have any recollection of these performers but I would love to know if they are still around and if they are still performing. With 35+ years having past, I suspect this is a futile search, but if anyone knows anything about them, I would love to be updated.

In the meantime, let me share a little of “Catch the Wind” with you so I am not the only one with this tune running in their head!

Get out on your bike or your horse and do some good for our local parks! These opportunities are perfect for people looking to get out and enjoy the beautiful area around us, while making a difference. Volunteer Opportunities The interpretive activities, trail patrols and trail work can’t happen without our great volunteers. Cuyamaca Rancho State Park is always looking for persons of all ages and backgrounds interested in assisting us with interpreting the parks natural and cultural history and keeping our visitors safe. Join One Of Our Four Volunteer Units! Mountain Bike Assistance Unit (MBAU) patrols the many miles of our multi use trails. They are the ambassadors who educate other riders on biking etiquette. Interpreters Assistance Unit (IAU) covers many diverse duties, from staffing the Visitor Center to leading nature walks. Mounted Assistance Unit (MAU) volunteers ride their own horses to patrol equestrian trails. They are the ambassadors who educate our horse riders on riding etiquette. Trails Maintenance Unit (TMU) is unique in that they don’t have much interaction with our visitors but instead focus on keeping over 100 miles of our trails open and in good repair. Contact Supervising Ranger, Bob Hillis (760) 765-3020 for more information. We found this information at the following link: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=25713

Free Fishing Class Lake Cuyamaca 15027 Highway 79 760-765-0515 Every Saturday at 10:00 AM there is a free fishing class held at the launch ramp. We teach what is working best for that particular week. Sometimes we talk about trout, other times it may be how to catch bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish. And we may just talk about catching all of these fish! The class covers all the basics you need to catch fish that day. We talk about baits, lures, how to rig your tackle and we even show you how to tie knots. For true beginners we will even teach you how to cast. Youth Fishing Program Here are the requirements of our youth fishing program: 1.All organized youth groups with prior reservations can fish for free. 2.Each youth must wear a name tag with their name and the organization printed on the tag. 3.All members of that group who are 16 years of age and older must possess a valid fishing license. 4.Adults must purchase a day use permit if they choose to fish. However, we recommend that the adults devote their attention to the youths in order to give them the best possible experience. 5.The District will provide up to 10 fishing poles at no charge to a responsible adult, with the understanding that any damage to equipment will be paid for at our replacement cost. 6.The reels cost us $18.95 and the pole is $23.00. It is good equipment and it stands up to use and abuse fairly well. 7.Groups pay regular price for camping and boat rentals. 8.The only thing that we ask is that each group send us a letter telling us how many children fished and the number and type of fish caught. http://www.lakecuyamaca.org/

The annual 4th of July Celebration is quickly approaching. This is the auxiliary’s most important fund raiser. The money always goes back into our Julian community with the proceeds used to fund the local American Legion Youth Programs, such as Americanism and Educational Scholarships, Community Outreach programs with of course, Veteran’s Hospital Programs. Tax deductible donations are being sought for the gift basket raffles to be held at the American Legion’s Independence Day Celebration. The Auxiliary is still short on volunteers, so to simplify the process GIFT CERTIFICATES are encouraged as they are easier to store and mail when necessary. It is s0 easy. The Legion has created a gift certificate form (created as a photo in this article, that you may print) to make it easier for you to make a donation. You may, of course use your own gift certificate as well. If you prefer to donate merchandise, please put it in a bag marked “American Legion Auxiliary 7/4″ and leave it at your place of business. An Auxiliary volunteer will come by and pick it up between now and June 30th. Because your gift needs to be numbered, listed and displayed in advance of the event, we kind ask that ALL gifts be received on or before June 30th. If you have any questions, you may contact Mary at 760-535-3752. Details: Mail gift certificates to American Legion Auxiliary – PO BOX 176, Julian, CA 92036, Attention Mary Avastu-Dawson. Thanks to everyone for their consideration!
